22nd December 2011 - Visit from Pearl Flutes

 

Today, Gareth McLearnon from Pearl Flutes visited the Museum.  He greatly admired the scrapboard belonging to the late Captain H. MaCauley Fitzgibbon which includes his writtens and history of the flute, the scrapboard also contains photographs of flutes from the Dayton C. Millar Flute Collection which is now the the Library of Congress in Washington D.C.  Gareth also viewed and tested some of the early band flutes including the Rudall Carte High Pitch Concert Flute was belonged to the late John Murdie Snr, who was the Irish Agent for Rudall Carte in London.


29th October 2011 - Death of our friend David Quinn

 

Recenty we learnt of the death of our friend and fellow flute collector David Quinn.  David has working in Afghanistan as a electricial contractor. He along with another British contractor and 13 US Troops and civilians where killed in a suicide car bombing in Kabul. Our Prayers go to David's wife and family in Scotland at this sad time.


9th September 2011 - Death of our friend Drew Porter

 

Its comes with great saddness that we announce the death of our friend Drew Porter who died today as a result of ill health. Drew  was the conductor of Churchill Flute Band and William King Memorial Flute Band from Londonderry for many years.


2nd August 2011 - Visit from Ballycoan Flute Band

 

Today, we had a few members from Ballycoan Flute Band and a member of the Corps of Drums Irish Guards visit us. Each where greatly impressed with the collection of flutes especially the Hawkes & Sons Crown AZs.


29th May 2010 - Fife and Drum Museum in Scotland
 
 
Today we travelled for the first time to Scotland with the Fife and Drum Museum.  Ardrossan Winton Flute Band hosted the event which attracted visitors as far as Edinburgh and Glasgow.  Over 200 flutes and 15 drums where on display.  We also given a powerpoint display of old flute band photographs including some Scottish flute bands which no longer play.

4th March 2010 - Death of our dear old friend Donald Sloan (Ulster Amateur Flute Band)
 

 
Donald Sloan died aged 103 years.
A founder of the Northern Ireland Flute Band League later becoming its President.  Known throughout the Marching Band World and had contacts throughout Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, Scotland, England and Canada.
